Mrs. Bond
I am looking for a specific post that I know was posted by Angoid on June 4, 2004. I went to Angoid's profile and clicked on "Show all posts by this Member" ... or whatever phrase that is. All his posts did come up, but they are in such a mish-mash of an order that it could take a long time to find exactly what you are looking for. There is no sequence and no logic to how they are listed. Is there anyway I can specify to show me the results in chronological order with the newest first? Then I could just scroll until I came upon June 4th.

I have trouble using the basic "Search" function also. Is there a secret as to how to do searches on the forum? Or perhaps even a help page to which I could refer for some tips and guidelines.

Thanks much ... all help and suggestions will be appreicated! smile.gif

Hi Mrs. Bond,

Searching for something specific, especially if it's more than a month old, can be a little tricky.

Here's what you can do:

1. Click on Search in the top menu bar.
2. Enter the name of the person whose posts you are searching for in the box below "Filter by member name".
3. There is a radio button there marked "Search with Keywords and User name, and another one marked "Search with Username alone". The default is for keywords and username, so as you don't know any words from the posting you'll need to check the Search with Username Alone radio button.
4. Under Search Where, specify the forum you want to look in if you know it. If not, just leave it as it is.
5. User Refin Search, you'll need to select "Last 365 days" in the "Search Posts From..." dropdown as 4th June is more than one month ago.
6. If you prefer ascending date order, check its radio button.
7. Click Perform the Search, and wade through the results.

As it's one of my posts you're looking for, I found only one post of mine on the 4th June and it's the second post in this thread here. It was specific advice to someone about a computer hijacking problem, so please by all means use it to research or get ideas, but advice of that nature is always specific to the person asking for help in that thread. Please don't use advice given to someone else to fix your own machine; if you've got an issue such as that yourself, please start a new thread and we'll be glad to help you smile.gif

Hope that helps!

Hi Mrs Bond,

In this version of the forum software, the search results for 'Find all posts by this member' are sorted by topic title. They are somewhat grouped by month too it seems. In newer versions, they are sorted in decending order by date. If you know the topic title, you'll need to scan back through them looking for the topic title.

The search feature in newer versions of the software is also much improved over this one. There are search options that you can use, obviously the more information you put into the search, the better the results will be. The results have options on how they can be sorted as well.

If you had given me some subject matter, or a topic title, I could have probably found it for you. Without anyting more than knowing Angoid posted it on a certain date, I can't offer much help.

Hope this helps smile.gif

Hi Angoid,

You made more posts than that on 6/4. The search results are sorted by last activity.. so if a topic was active after you posted, it wouldn't show as having the 6/4 date on the right.

If you go back through 'Find all posts by this member' from your profile, you'll find more than occurred on 6/4.

Cheers smile.gif

Thanks Mark,

I thought it seemed strange that only one post showed up ... I used the procedure I outlined for Mrs. Bond, and asked it to sort by ascending date. The one below it was 30th May and the one after it was (I think) the 6th June, so either I'm going blind or I simply missed it.

Cheers,

A.

Hi Angoid and Mark,

Thanks to both of you for your detailed answers and offers of help. Perhaps I should have gone into more detail in my post, but I hate to be a typical woman and just ramble on and on. keybrd.gif keybrd.gif keybrd.gif

I knew what the post was about because I had received an email notification of it and I had copied and filed away that email so that I could refer to it later if the need ever arose. The reason I was trying to find it was because I just wanted to see if there was any additional information.

Angoid - Thank goodness I didn't need the information because I have a personal hijack issue ... knock on wood that I NEVER will. I am the Queen of Paranoia when it comes to being careful with my machine so hopefully you will never see a HJT Log post from me.

Like I said, I was just searching for the sake of reference, and when I realized that the seach methods in place seemed to be so confusing, I just thought I would ask the question. I appreciate the explanations provided by both of you regarding how Search works at SAF. I have printed up this entire thread and will keep it for future help.

Many thanks - I really appreciate how you guys and all the other folks here on this board always come through and are so helpful when a member has a problem. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
