I just read a comment by Dashwood saying that this system is a resource hog. I just purchased it before I read his comment and now I am concerned, should I be? I am having trouble with my present NAV 2003 (keep getting error messages about the integrity of the settings cant be verified). I uninstalled and reinstalled several times...still the same message. Other then the error message, it seems to be working fine.

I thought by upgrading to the NIS it might solve the problem...any comments?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Dashie is right. If you want to go Norton, all the average person needs is Personal Firewall and their Norton AntiVirus proggies (although I prefer Trend Micro PC-Cillin AV). They work very nicely together, and don't slow your computer down. Sometimes these software companies try to be "all things to all people" and you end up with the kind of headaches you are experiencing, and worse.

Pc-Cillin 2003 also comes with a good, configurable firewall.

If you do get another product, you must completely uninstall Norton before installing the new software. Norton garbage gets deep into your registry. Here is the Norton Removal tool.

Thanks for the information, I had already seen that on the Norton site. I was hesitant in using this tool for fear of messing up the registry, I am not that knowledgeable with computers.

Norton Internet Security is based on the old tried and proven ATGuard firewall, still regarded by many users as the best software firewall ever developed, and remains widely used even tho it's technology is considered to be outdated. However, as with all things Norton, it has become bloatware. Still, as far as it's effectiveness is concerned, it is an effective piece of software. The antivirus part of the program is Ok, but Norton av is never as effective as most of the av programs I test. Because it is so bloated, it is a resource vampire, although not half as bad as McAfee Security Suite.

I would just use a good antivirus and a separate firewall.

One of the things to consider with any of these packages is the useability. What I mean by that is - do all desired features work in your environment? An example of this is PC Cillan's method of providing Email AV protection which does not work with all service providers - if I enable the Email features, it changes the server address and I can't receive any Email. I guess this means that I'm 100% protected from Email virus' lol.gif

Thanks guys for all the comments. I just used the RNAV removal tool, reinstalled the NAV 2003 and it seems to have cured my error message.

Unfortunately I couldnt cancel my order for the Norton Internet Security. So I guess I will just return it when it arrives.

Thanks and Aloha

hi
forgive me for adding on, but i just wanted to add my 2 cents re: McAfee, since i use their internet renewable security suite. Generally good but the darn thing acts like a "pop-up" queen on occasion and "helpfully" reminds you that you have neglected to download their latest viral signature for 5-7 days. I love the point of being up to date and this would all be fine except it pops up whenever you are in the middle of some other important thing and on occasion has crashed some older programs on me (that are less tolerant of being sublimated by pop-ups). Even when u are off-line! It is impossible to control this behavior completely. I have spent over 5 hours with 7 different of their techs - with limited success.

That's ok. PC-cillin is still protecting your system even with that feature turned off. I posted about this a while ago when I went thru the same thing.
