Mike Healans' SpywareInfo.com is considered the web's largest (as far as I'm concerned) information resource specializing in spyware. SAF has a close working relationship with this site. Recently SWI came under a devastating and sustained Denial of Service attack which took them, and their associated sites that originated programs like HijackThis and CoolWebShredder (which we've all come to depend on), completely offline. Whatever they are, they're no copycat of SAF. Mike is a regular visitor at SAF. smiley- thumb up.gif

If my statements were interpreted as implying the site copied SAF, I apologize.

I should have been more definitive. What I meant was the layout was the same and the information, although more specific relating to virus and trojans, is very informative. I found it while surfing and spent a fair amount of time there.

As novice as I am, I am in no positition to judge good/bad/copycat sites.

Again, if I offended anyone at SAF or Spyware, I meant no harm and this was not my intent. I now know better. Please accept my apologies

Chris, I don't believe anyone would have taken offense. If anything what you said would have been a simple, obvious observation. Actually, most of the sites that use Invision software seem to look pretty similar.

I think this layout is the default setting for Invision, although I'm no Invision expert.
Other forums that use it have much the same "look and feel". It's one of the best forum software packages I've come across.

What does get confusing though is the way the named window for "Assistant" (aka "My Assistant") comes up - it is always given the same window name internally at the HTML level. Frequently I find myself with this site, SpywareInfo, and other Invision sites open simultaneously, and it can be VERY difficult sometimes to determine which board the Assistant pertains to!! Especially when they all use the same blue skin....

Hi,

I'll address some of the issues discussed above if I can...

Our site (in it's current incarnation) is a couple years old, and although we looked different from most of the sites running Invision then, there are now many sites that resemble ours aside from subtle differences.

We do have 6 board skins to choose from, so you're not stuck with our standard 'Blue Skies' on the forum. To look at the other available skins, go to:

Controls > Skin and Languages, then select a skin from the drop menu and preview it. If you find one you like, leave it showing in the drop menu, and click 'Change my account options'.

The 'My Assistant' verbage isn't hard coded into the HTML. It's in the language files, and I've now changed it to 'SAF Assistant'.

I changed the text in the right side of the member bar from the standard Invision setup as follows:

My Controls to Controls
My Assistant to Assistant
0 new messages to Inbox- 0 new
View New Posts to New Posts

The reason for the change was so we could add a link to 'Today's Topics', and still have all the text fit on one line when the board is displayed in 800x600 screen resolution. The 'today's topics' link was previously only accessible from the bottom of the board, and the consensus at the time was that it would be more useful if the option was available from the top of the board as well. I also added a quick login box to the member bar that shows at the top when logged out, again this was requested by some of our members who liked the convenience of not having to scroll to the bottom of the board to use quick login.

Hope this helps smile.gif

Thanks Mark, that helps quite a lot. smiley- thumb up.gif

As for the "My Assistant" issue, I didn't mean the name of the assistant as it appears in the window title, I meant the name of the window at the HTML level being forced to 'BrowserBuddy' in the JavaScript function buddy_pop().

For example:
1. Fire up a SAF session. The one you're using to browse this with will do.
2. Click on Assistant. You get the SAF Assistant smile.gif
3. Fire up another browser session and go to another Invision site such as SpywareInfo. Go to the forums.
4. Click on 'My Assistant' and watch the SAF Assistant get changed to the SWI one!

That occurs because of the name 'BrowserBuddy' - is that one hardcoded?

It's not a big issue, just an observation more than anything else.
