Say what?
You have an unwanted folder AND you're looking for some type of check box? What type of check box are you looking for? |

Haha. Say what? I haven't heard anyone but me say that in a while.
I agree. I've never heard of a start folder on the desktop or any check boxes to remove a folder....unless you're talking about the properties setup where you uncheck if you want the "My Network Places" "My Documents" etc. to display on your desktop. If that's the case, you'll find no option or accompanying check box that says "Start Folder" because there isn't one. Please elaborate so we can get a better idea of what's happening. -------------------- Dash-Queen of Typos

LOL! It seems I've even threw myself for a loop on this one. My apologies.
I have a folder on my desktop named "Start Menu". This is a new laptop to me and it was there when I got it... This folder is a System Folder and can not be deleted.... Sooooo with that being said I know there is a way to get it off my desktop because none of my other computers have that folder on the desktop... I just figured there might be something to uncheck or something like that to get rid of it from MY Desktop.... |

Few things I've heard of.
1) Just right click the Start Menu, Choose Properties. Switch from current view to the alternate view. So if you're on XP look choose Classic. The folder should disappear, and you can switch your view back immediately. 2) The error may have been caused by trying to add a shortcut to the top of the Start Menu but accidentally placing it on the desktop. 3) You can also Right click the desktop, click 'Personalize', click 'Change desktop icons', click 'Restore default' Downside is that if you made some additions/subtractions to your desktop icons you'll have to do that again. -------------------- Dash-Queen of Typos

Neither of those solutions worked... Has this never happened before? The same message always appears; can not delete it's a system folder... I'm thinking this maybe a registry edit
any other Ideas? Thanks JML |

System restore wasn't able to work because there was a "start menu folder"on every restore piont going way back before I owned the laptop.
The contents are the same as if you clicked the start button/ programs / assessories / administrative tools etc. Kind of weird HUH? |

Running XP Pro here. Doesn't Home have the option to turn off Administrative Tools in the Start button properties? You might even try switching to Classic View if it's already on the normal XP view. Never encountered this before. Perhaps the laptop was part of a business environment and their IT guy did something to it in the Policies. Unlocker is great. It'll let you remove it, but it may just come right back next boot.

Apparently when adding a shortcut to the top of the Start Menu (above programs and the divider), that too can cause the problem. This is supposedly a fairly common error though I ran XP for years and never encountered it once and cannot seem to duplicate it either...Course I don't have XP loaded on this machine, but I tried.
Jim/Surfer that's nifty. Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, have you gone in SAFE MODE or as the root Admin to try and delete it? Lastly, check your startup folder and make sure that folder on the desktop is not listed there. -------------------- Dash-Queen of Typos

Well for whatever reason this folder wants to reside on the desktop. I have the unlocker program but a few questions first;
Where is the "Start menu" folders original location? I can't find a folder thats titled "Start Menu" on on my other machine anywhere... If I do unlock it and delete it will I not have the contents of the "start menu" anymore? Should it really be DELETED or just moved/prevented from showing up on the desktop? Read alot about this on the web and it seems like some kind of glitch in XP and Vista of which the origin is vague most likely due to it rarity. |
