I have an ongoing problem with Windows Explorer errors.
Whenever I open the My Pictures folder, within a few seconds an error message appears, "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".
I have tried altering the folder options to Photo albums with no difference. Can anyone help? confused.gif

Then try an Over the Top repair Install:

Insert your XP CD into your CD drive and restart your computer.

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed.
DO NOT SELECT this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP, Follow the menu on the screen to complete Setup.

Hi, I'm back!
Just a few thoughts before I follow your advice. I have service pack 3 installed but my installation disc is only service pack 2! Will this operation mean I have to reinstall pack 3?
Also in the same vein will I then have to install all the other updates I have?

Many times your problem is related with a bad codec instalitation.

It can be solved using:

REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL

In this case the explorer won't try to open the properties.

angelu,
Many thanks for your solution, it worked instantly. Of course as soon as I had your solution I found several references to it on the web. I had previously only found that lots of people were having tha same problems. Many thanks again.
