This morning when I woke up I noticed that there were several pop up windows, all regarding a potential virus that had infected my pc.

As I removed them, of course more popped up. I was able to remove them finally and immediately ran AVG and Mcafee virus scan. I had to leave for work before they finished but when I returned home, both had finished running and there were several trojans quarantined and many many tracking cookies.

But the oddest thing was that my desktop was blood red and a message in the center

Your Privacy is In Danger
Download Privacy Protection Software now !

The first thing I did was to reboot, but it was still there. Then I ran the virus protection scans again and strange enough, they found nothing. The AVG scan did find four trojans ZLOB.PEB ZLOB.PGS ZLOB.PGQ ZLOB.PGR

When I clicked on my desktop, an internet window opened to this address: securepccleaner.com

I really dont want to buy a fix from the bastard that sent me the bug. Any ideas

Thanks

Welcome to SAF, Springmaster.

I edited your link to securepccleaner.com. Malware tried to install when I clicked on the link.

At the top of this forum, there's a link to a HijackThis tutorial. Please read it and follow the instructions for posting a log.

Download ComboFix to your desktop and run it from there. Just follow the prompts and save the log file it produces. Note: Do not mouseclick the ComboFix window while its running. That may cause it to stall.

Next, locate HijackThis.exe at this location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe Rename it to Whatever.exe and run it (some malware can hide from HijackThis.exe, hence the name change). Post a fresh log along with the ComboFix report and we'll see how things look.

Not quite what I expected. confused.gif This appears to be something new and not a variant of an older infection.

Let's try using a sledgehammer (metaphorically speaking) and see what results. Download The Avenger to your desktop and unzip it there.

Before running it, run HijackThis and check the boxes next to these lines:

O21 - SSODL: drvsvp - {5DA94199-C407-49E2-AF56-0584EC44A104} - C:\WINDOWS\drvsvp.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: msduo2 - {1637BD60-042E-41E6-985B-913FE4625A03} - C:\WINDOWS\msduo2.dll (file missing)

Click on 'Fix checked' and close HijackThis.

Run The Avenger and click on 'Input Script Manually', then click on the magnifying glass icon. In the box that opens, copy/paste the bold text:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\drvsvp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\msduo2.dll

Click on 'Done' and then click on the traffic lights icon. You'll be prompted to reboot. In the Avenger folder, you'll find a text file with the results of the deletions. Post that along with a fresh HijackThis log.

It's late here in Hong Kong. I won't be able to check for your reply for another 12 hours (real life intrudes).

Followed the instructions as noted but when I clicked on the traffic light I received an error message box
Error: Selected file does not appear to be a valid script

I click OK

Another error message box appears
Press OK to log error and continue or cancel to abort

I click OK

Another error message box appears
Error Code :0

But I still rebooted and will post my log in a sec

Can you confirm that this is the script you entered:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\drvsvp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\msduo2.dll

The syntax is correct.

If you entered this:

O21 - SSODL: drvsvp - {5DA94199-C407-49E2-AF56-0584EC44A104} - C:\WINDOWS\drvsvp.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: msduo2 - {1637BD60-042E-41E6-985B-913FE4625A03} - C:\WINDOWS\msduo2.dll (file missing)

You get the error messages you describe.

Are you still getting the popups and the "Your Privacy is In Danger" message?

Hold off on that for the moment. it's likely a Smitfraud infection. Go here and read Grinler's instructions, starting at "Automated Removal Instructions for VirusBursters and VirusBurst" about a fifth of the way down the page. You'll need SmitfraudFix which is linked to on the site. Follow Grinler's instructions for using the program. Please note the final instruction (#11): Once the computer has rebooted, you will be presented with a Notepad screen containing a log of all the files removed from your computer. Save that log and post it here.

This diagnosis hit it right on the mark. I followed your easy instructions and I am now clear of whatever had infected my pc.

Thanks for your help and I will donate to Ana as part of my thanks

Hi Rick,

Ed is out for a while. Just to be at the safe side, can you please post back a new HJT log ?

Also, if you still have the SmitfraudFix log (C:\Rapport.txt) Ed asked for, it would help. rolleyes.gif

Chris
