Hello,
I saw a 2005 archival reference to 'invalid MS-DOS function' here, and I am getting that same 'invalid MS-DOS function' error copying '1386' to HDD from my owned original XP Pro SP2 o/s disk [2-disk set--genuine and registered]. File coming up this way is ''themedef''. Also, but only on this copying issue, is ''wmadmod''__same 'invalid MS-DOS function' error. The error stops my copying attempt, and I cant make a full clean copy.

I am not trying to burn a disk for a ripoff__just to isolate 1386 for BartPE. I am original owner of this XP Pro SP2 set.

I am trying to build Bart PE and need the i386 file. I am copying it out to a file on the desktop from my 'opened' CD in the CDROM drive.

Recently the same file ''themedef'' file hangs when re- loading XP Pro onto my pc from the same CD, and I have to keep trying 2-20 times to get past it and load the o/s. Finally it passes OK. Same file does not hang on laptop install w same disk.

Can someone please advise regarding this nissue. I dont mean to mix topics on the post, it is just that the same basic filr 'themedef' is the one that comes up in both related [?] issues. Please advise and thanks.

Hi fallsoffmotorcycle , welcome to SAF

I'd guess you have some baddies playing around... rolleyes.gif

Download and run CrapCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/
Note: in CCleaner: go to <options/advanced> Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours").

Please Run updated versions of Spybot S&D and AdAware SE (one at a time), cleaning all that may be listed.
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
AdAware - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
(remember to update databases before scanning and to set Spybot to Immunize your system)

Perform an online virus scan from http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan or from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Next, take a look at this pinned topic and post a HijackThis log here along with the online a/v scan log, as we can take a look at them: http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?showtopic=16053
Note: Remember to rename hijackthis.exe to anything.exe you feel comfortable with, as new baddies may detect hijackthis.exe and hide from it.

Chris

Download BartPE from the link shown here and see if it will work.
